The Chumash and Tataviam Native Americans, who lived right here in Southern California, were expert basket weavers, and on Friday, January 17, in our fourth installment of the new monthly Happenin’s at Hart program, we try our hand at basket weaving too!  So come on out and give it a “weave” – we’ll also take a look at how baskets supported the daily life needs of these incredible peoples.  Cost is free and all ages welcome!

Did you know that Hart Park is home to a baby mule deer, two horses, a donkey, a 2,000lb Holstein steer, wild boars, pot-bellied pigs, AND an incredible collection of ground-dwelling birds?  Well, now’s your chance to come and meet the amazing residents of the Hart Park Animal Barnyard!  Join us on Friday, February 21 at 2:00pm* for a special tour of the complex and learn more about the habits and lifestyles of our animal friends.  Feeding will also be involved!  So come and join us** – Perfect for those young ones in K through 5th grade!

*This is a guided tour program so please try to arrive in the Hart Park Picnic Area at 2:00pm.  Tour will depart from the Picnic Area at 2:15pm.

**Weather permitting:  in the event of rain, we will move Happenin’s from the outdoor Animal Barnyard into the spacious banquet room, Hart Hall, and design our own Old West boomtown instead!

Bill Hart was friends with both Wild West outlaws, like Al Jennings, and Wild West federal marshals, like Wyatt Earp.  Who were these guys and what lasting legacy have they left on our understanding of the Old West?  Come find out as we host our third Open House on Thursday, April 24!  Explore Bill Hart’s hilltop mansion at your own pace, enjoying his amazing collection of Western art, Native American artifacts, and memorabilia from early Hollywood, and spend some time exploring our series of hands-on, interactive, crafty activity stations that dig deeper into the lives and legacies of the Old West’s notorious outlaws and federal marshals.  Then finish off your Old West day with an intimate evening performance of Wyatt and Josephine Earp (separate admission charge) in the Hart Mansion Living Room as part of the Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival!  More details coming soon!

Walking Tour of Old Town Newhall

Come on out and explore the western history of Old Town Newhall!  You start the day off with a guided walking tour of historic Main Street, which includes stops along The Walk of Western Stars, a path of plaques that honor the biggest and best names in the western entertainment industry, including legends John Wayne, Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, John Ford, and many more!  Then you’ll relax in Hart Park’s spacious banquet hall and enjoy a catered lunch before you head out into the splendor of the Park for a private guided tour of the silent screen star’s former ranch, including his 1910 ranch house, dog graveyard, bunk house, and the 1927 western-art-filled Spanish Colonial Revival mansion.  Wrap up the afternoon with a viewing of a classic western silent film, starring none other than Bill Hart himself!  An incredible chance to immerse yourself in local history, so be sure to wear walking shoes, a hat, and bring your camera!
