Happenins at Hart:  Scrimshaw
Fun after-school programs for that young’un to enjoy!
Friday, January 16, 2015
3:30pm – 4:30pm
Hart Park Picnic Area**
Cost is FREE
Perfect for students in K – 5th Grade

In ye days o’ old, mateys, sailors spent their downtime at sea carving detailed images into the bones of whales and other large sea animals.  These images were considered so beautiful, they became their own art form:  scrimshaw.  And our favorite cowboy movie star, Bill Hart, owned a few pieces of this unique art!  Which is why we’re going to try our hand at it in the monthly Happenins at Hart after school program.  Come on by and create your own beautiful scrimshaw art… we provide all the supplies (admittedly, we will not use whale bones but air-dry clay), and you do the rest!

** Weather-permitting!  In the case of inclement weather, the activity will move into Hart Hall near the entrance of Hart Park **

Hart Park Picnic Area **

Perfect for students in K – 5th Grade

One of the most important activities a museum does is create exhibits for visitors to see.  But how does that work?  How do museums curate (create) an exhibit?  Well, we’re going to give it a try at the February Happenins at Hart after school program when we curate our own exhibit.  Follow us along on the steps of exhibit curation where we’ll decide on the story we want to tell, pick the objects we want to use in that story, and then figure out how to arrange the objects so they tell the story the best way.  We provide all the supplies, and you start curating!

** Weather-permitting!  In the case of inclement weather, the activity will move into Hart Hall near the entrance of Hart Park **

Day at the Ranch:  Wildlife Watchin’

Saturday, March 21, 2015

Hart Museum Ranch House

Perfect for students in K – 5th Grade

Bill Hart may have called it The Horseshoe Ranch, and he may have lived in a gorgeous hilltop mansion as befitting an international movie star.  But the 150-acre property that Hart owned was (and still is!) windswept wilderness, and home to everything from the eye-catching purple sage, yucca, and valley oak tree to the ominous-sounding stink beetle, western diamondback rattlesnake, and western fence lizard, to the wooly and wild mule deer, bobcat, coyote, and mountain lion!  And in our newest, latest, and greatest iteration of the Day at the Ranch series, we’re going to explore these native neighbors with a series of family-fun, hands-on, interactive, and oh-so-crafty activities!  So come join us in William S. Hart Park, where we’ll have a chance to make our own wildlife watchin’ supplies, learn how to track down animals via the signs they leave behind, and maybe even spot a wildlife friend or two while we’re at it!

The Hart Museum kicks off the 22nd Cowboy Festival with a special, extended Happenin’s at Hart on Friday, April 17!  Hike on up to Bill Hart’s glorious hilltop mansion, and make your own serape!  That’s right, pardners, Hart’s Horseshoe Ranch was once grazing land for the 44,000-acre el Rancho San Francisco, under the management of Mexican Vaquero, don Antonio del Valle.  And we honor this heritage by designing our own version of the single most important item in a vaquero’s wardrobe – his colorful serape!  We will be set up right in front of the Hart Mansion, so come on up!  Cost is completely FREE, and we provide all the supplies.  You do the designing!

Saturday, April 18 from 11:00am – 4:00pm, and Sunday, April 19 from 11:00am – 4:00pm
Bill Hart may have only played a cowboy on screen, but his beautiful Spanish Colonial Revival mansion is a cowboy’s dream home.  So come on up the hill and enjoy the chance to wander through the movie star’s private residence, experiencing his incredible collections of western artwork, Native American artifacts, and personal furnishings at your own pace!  Yes, pardners, we open the doors for you to enjoy the beauty, history, and culture of Bill Hart’s home at your leisure.  Docents will be on hand to answer all your questions and introduce you to the cowboy behind the movie camera.  Don’t forget the family since we will offer them young’uns a chance to make their own sombrero and their own mini horse pal at our fun crafty tables set up right outside the mansion on the front drive.  Cost is FREE!

Friday, April 17 at 8:00pm
What happens when you mix jazz, swing, and cowboy music?  CowBop happens!  That’s right, pardners, this award-winning quintet returns to the William S. Hart Mansion for a one-night only performance, and their only performance at the Cowboy Festival!  So don’t miss your chance to see them serve it up swingin’ and jazzy in the comforts of Bill Hart’s own Living Room.  Surrounded by Charles Russell masterpieces, an amazing collection of Native American baskets, and yes, a bear skin rug to boot, you aren’t going to find a better venue for the unique musical stylings of CowBop.  Tickets are $45 a piece, and on sale at www.cowboyfestival.org

Saturday, April 18 at 8:00pm
The legend of Wild West showman, Buffalo Bill Cody comes to larger-than-life in this one-man show, An Evening with Buffalo Bill, staged by longtime Western actor and consultant, Peter Sherayko.  Sit back and relax in Bill Hart’s luxurious living room – all 1200 square feet of it! – and enjoy this intimate evening of humor and history.  Tickets on sale now for this incredible and unique experience at www.cowboyfestival.org.  At only $40 a piece, hurry up and get yours before this hit show sells out!
