Happenins at Hart:  Scrimshaw
Fun after-school programs for that young’un to enjoy!
Friday, January 15, 2016
3:30pm – 4:30pm
Hart Park Picnic Area**
Cost is FREE
Perfect for students in K – 5th Grade

In ye days o’ old, mateys, sailors spent their downtime at sea carving detailed images into the bones of whales and other large sea animals.  These images were considered so beautiful, they became their own art form:  scrimshaw.  And our favorite cowboy movie star, Bill Hart, owned a few pieces of this unique art!  Which is why we’re going to try our hand at it in the monthly Happenins at Hart after school program.  Come on by and create your own beautiful scrimshaw art… we provide all the supplies (admittedly, we will not use whale bones but air-dry clay), and you do the rest!

** Weather-permitting!  In the case of inclement weather, the activity will move into Hart Hall near the entrance of Hart Park **

Wooly Bison, darting lizards, rattling western diamondbacks, quail calling chi-ca-go, the former Horseshoe Ranch has them all and more. In the first of our 2016 Day at the Ranch series, we’ll explore and learn about the hardy animal and plant dwellers of the chaparral at William S. Hart Park. Through a series of interactive craft activities we’ll learn how to identify vegetation like the Yucca or the Juniper tree and develop a sharp eye for animal tracks. While William S. Hart built a luxurious abode at the top of the hill, our resident birds must find shelter as well, which we’ll tackle by building them some homes ourselves. So come join us at William S. Hart Park for a day of creative, real life, outdoors adventure!!

Saturday, April 23 at 8:00pm
The real life Wyatt Earp was a close friend of western movie star William S. Hart. When Earp died in 1929, Mr. Hart was a pallbearer at the famous lawman’s funeral. Spend a rare evening in Bill Hart’s Mansion living room as New York Times best-selling author-historian, Casey Tefertiller, pulls back the curtain and reveals the true life story of this legendary frontier marshal. You will hear about his early years as a lawman, the OK Corral, the time he spent here in Los Angeles and his friendship with William S. Hart. If you enjoy hearing about real history, join us for an evening of enlightenment about Wyatt Earp and the real life behind the legend.
This is Casey’s only Southern California appearance. Tickets are $35 each, and on sale at http://cowboyfestival.org/schedule/wyatt-earp/
